Know your birds

Not all birds are created equal. For the red birds introduced at the earlier levels, there's not much more than meets the eye. But in later levels, the game offers up different birds that excel at different tasks.

"There are a lot of ways to beat each level, but if you want to get three stars, you need to use the right kind of bird for the right kind of thing," he said, adding that if you strategically use your birds, you have a better shot at earning the bonus points awarded for leftover birds at the end of the level.

At the start of each level, Patel said, look at the set-up your birds need to break in order to smash the pigs, and then use your birds accordingly.

 Blue bird – If you need to break ice, this is your bird of choice. It doesn't do so well with wood or stone, but Patel said it blows right through blocks of ice. It also splits into three pieces if you tap the screen after releasing the bird into flight.

 Yellow bird – The kind developers behind Angry Birds didn't want to leave players totally without clues, so they matched the color of the birds to the items they are best at breaking. The yellow birds' forte? The yellow-colored beams of words. They also speed up when players tap the screen after firing them off.

Use Your Birds to Your Advantage

 White bird – White birds mean double trouble. Not only can they do damage when they drop their "egg bombs," they can wreck even more when they bounce and ram into structures protecting the crafty green pigs.

"A lot of people think you want to use the egg bomb," he said. "But it's really less about the bomb, it's more about the bounce."

 Black bird – Patel's favorite, the black bird looks like a bomb and acts like one too. After you release the bird, it explodes if you tap the screen while it's in flight.

Be experimental

Even though each bird has its purpose, Patel said to experiment with different tactics, because most of the tricks he uncovered were accidental.

"Just because they give you a bird, it doesn't mean you need to use it the way it's supposed to be used," he said. The boomerang bird, for example, can smash through plenty when fired straight just like any other bird.

Be on the Lookout for Surprises, Keep Trying

Keep an eye out for golden eggs

One of the many secrets hidden in Angry Birds are the elusive golden eggs. (Patel said that though he's beaten each of the levels released by Rovio, he still hasn't unlocked all of the eggs.)

Sometimes they appear when a bird travels in an exceptionally high arc on the screen; other times they appear when your finger scrolls to locations off the screen. But Patel said they offer up extra rounds of game play and bonus points.

Persistence pays off

But, aside from knowing the basics, Patel said the key is just to keep on keeping on. It may seem like some levels take an eternity to conquer but he said that, ultimately, with a few minutes here and there, you'll power through.

"They are no set rules on how to play angry birds," Patel said. "You just want to keep trying and, eventually, you'll figure it out."

You will die. Like its naming inspiration, Flappy Bird, Crossy Road will kill you repeatedly. Death is inevitable and plentiful, but trying again is quick and easy. The ways to die include: being run over, jumping into a moving vehicle, being abducted by an eagle, falling into a river, and more. And yes, even aquatic animals will die when they fall into water.

Always aim for grass. The only safe areas where you can take a breather without being killed by a moving object are the grassy medians and lily pads. If you aren’t currently standing on one of these, you’ll need to be alert and focused on what’s coming at you.

Master the fast tap. Although the best strategy overall is to take your time and plan your moves individually, you can often power your way through a large gauntlet of hazards via fast taps in a straight line. This is usually most helpful on roads where cars are synchronized.

…But always count your taps. If the road you’re trying to cross is three lanes long, fast tap four times and then stop. It’s easy to get so into what you’re doing that you keep tapping and run right into the next obstacle; counting while you tap helps prevent this.

Angry Birds is one of my favorite examples of a game that can teach us. As difficult as some of the levels are, the time it takes to restart each level is minimal. This keeps the gamer from getting frustrated and quitting and allows them to quickly get back into the game and learn from their previous mistake. Failure is something we have written about before, and that is because we see it not just as character building, but one of the best ways to learn.

But it's definitely not easy, and it's full of secrets you might not be aware of. We decided to throw together this Angry Birds walkthrough guide, which covers everything from basic tips to secret goodies, to help you get the most out of Angry Birds.

The Basics

Angry Birds depicts the life-long struggle of bird-versus-pig, and its your job to catapult these kamikaze birds into the pig's towers, knocking down their houses and defeating the green swines inside.

High score

Simply killing all the birds will unlock the next level, but if you want to get the maximum three stars on each stage, you'll need to aim for some high scores.

The key to getting a high score in Angry Birds is a mixture of deadly efficiency (unused birds net you an automatic 10,000 points each) and unrelenting damage (smashed objects give off small, but quickly accumulated points).

You'll often need to use both strategies at once, though: simply using a very small number of birds might not get all three stars if you didn't make much damage.

Get physical

The iPhone packs a powerful processor that's more than capable of pumping out a pretty convincing simulation of physics. That means that offsetting balance and attacking weak points is always a more effective strategy than blindly firing at the main reinforced walls.

Plus, some materials are sturdier than others. It's no use fruitlessly bashing away at a stone wall (especially because it takes about three direct hits to finally smash one) when you could focus on the easily destructible wooden platform that's holding it up.

Assorted tips

Pinch and zoom to see the entire battlefield on one screen, so you can quickly see how far away your catapult is from the pig's base.

Every bird leaves a trail of dust behind, meaning you can replicate (or slightly deviate from) previous throws without the tedious guesswork.

You don't always have to attack from left to right: if you aim the bird high enough you can attack from above. Perfect for levels with fortified walls, but exposed roofs.

Wait until your previous bird disappears. If you hit your last bird's dazed body, your attack will be significantly dampened.

Unlocked: From beginning

Plain old projectile birds. Won't do anything when tapped, and isn't very tough either.

Blue

Unlocked: World 1, Level 10

Achievement: Split it! (10 points)

Scattershot birds dissipate into three small projectiles when the screen is tapped.

Think of these little guys like a shotgun. You can make a scattershot early to hit a good range of targets, but ideally you want to release these fellows close to the target so all three birds will smash into a small area at once. That's how you inflict the most damage.

Yellow

Unlocked: World 1, Level 16

Achievement: Speed is the Essence (10 points)

Kamikaze birds rocket at super speeds when the screen is tapped.

Despite their greatly increased velocity, they still won't do much damage to materials like stone and glass. They rip through wood like it's wet paper, though, allowing you to quickly attack enemies buried deep within a structure.

Black

Unlocked: World 2, Level 5

Achievement: Boom Boom! (10 points)

These are caustic birds that explode to create shockwaves and destroy close blocks and birds. They blow up in their own time, but if you tap you can explode them instantly.

Remember, these guys are so heavy that they'll destroy even a large chunk of stone in just one hit.

White

Unlocked: World 2, Level 14

Achievement: Mother of all Bombs (10 points)

Egg-dropping maternal birds. Tap the screen to launch an explosive egg from your backside, before firing your now deflated friend into the stratosphere. Get as low to the target as possible for maximum splash damage.

Don't forget: these enemies can still be used as classic red-styled birds if you don't tap. Useful if you just need a boring old projectile.

Boomerang

Unlocked: World 6, Level 5

Achievement: Return to Sender (10 points)

Boomerang birds turn around and fly backwards at roughly double the speed when the screen is tapped. Learning their trajectory is just a matter of patience and experience. In the right hands, though, these exotic toucans can be deadly accurate, and very powerful.

You can fire them backwards, and then quickly tap the screen to make a fast-flying bird. You'll be hard pressed to make efficient hits in this way, but it's a useful trick to keep under your belt.

Big Brother

Unlocked: World 9, Level 1

Achievement: Seeing Red (10 points)

At the time of writing, the Big Brother bird is the game’s final poultry-type, offering up enormous power. This pot bellied evolution of the classic red starter rips through wood and glass like butter, and can take out concrete without too much bother either.

He has the destructive power of the black bomb bird, just without the explosive finale. His giant size makes it tough to squeeze into tight corners, but he can wipe out entire structures just by wiping out the bottom foundations.

There’s little strategy found here: just let him loose and watch materials smash and pigs pop!

Orange

Unlocked: World 18, Level 1

Achievement: None

This new bird was actually introduced in Angry Birds Seasons, but has since made his way to the original game. He looks like a scrawny little chap when he's sat in the catapult, but one tap of the screen unleashes his true power.

He puffs up like a self-inflating dinghy, forcibly pushing aside blocks and pigs alike. He's a little like the bomb bird but smaller (perfect for entering tight spaces) and his power is more destructive than explosive.

Look for tight openings and fire the Orange Bird right in. When he puffs up you'll dislodge the foundations, making anything above tumble to the ground.

The game will also show you the line that represents the flight from your previous bird, so you can make adjustments to angles, speeds, etc. very quickly. That kind of instant feedback is key to making an immersive experience, but also in helping your recover from the frustration of a bad shot as well. It also helps improve hand to eye (finger to eye?) coordination by allowing you to trace out a good shot, or quickly identify where you could improve.

Chocolate Fountains don’t appear until level 156 but when they do, watch out! These machines will regenerate chocolate, even if you’ve cleared the whole board of chocolate   blockers.

Bombs


Bombs are colored just like normal Candy Crush Saga candies and can only be cleared through a 3-candy combo or  by a special candy. The number inside the bomb indicates how many moves you are given to clear the bomb. If you don’t clear the bomb in the set number of moves, the game is over and you lose a life.

Licorice

Licorice Swirls (or blocks) take up spaces on your board where there could be candies. These can be cleared by making a move adjacent to the licorice swirl.

Licorice Xs

Also known as Locked Candies, a licorice X will prevent you from moving the candy inside. In order to clear the licorice  you need to use a special candy or to make a candy combination with the same colors WITHIN the locked candy.

- This game doesn't require you to play on any difficulty higher than easy so just leave it on easy for your single player playthrough and destroy the competition

- Keep the badges in mind when racing, always try for perfect starts to reduce the amount of grind at the end.

- Don't worry about getting all the stars for events as it's not needed for 1000/1000 just focus on coming 1st place.

- I highly recommend leaving all assists on but switching to a manual transmission as the automatic in this game can be really annoying.

- During races once you're in the lead focus on mastering corners as that's 1 less corner you need to master later.

- Don't worry about clean races as there is an easy way to do them once you're finished the main game

- Just focus on making it to, and beating the NFS World Championship.

De-Dub-It, please. Another thing that helped my times was to turn off the horrible dub step in the game. You can do this by going to the Options, Settings, and turning the music down to 0%.

Re-Re-RE-RACE. Race matching can feel wrong at times with some opponents being really much worse than you and others being way stronger. I’ve found that if you retry a race a few times the opponents will get easier overall. This only seems to work if you try the same race immediately though. It’s like the game is rewarding you for getting back on the bicycle.
